URBAN INFRASTRUCTURE & NATURAL SYSTEMS
The use of undervalued or waste spaces in the city is a potentially fruitful area of research for community food production. A raised section of the Gardiner Expressway at the mouth of the Don River in Toronto provides the location for this project, prepared as part of an architectural thesis at Ryerson University. It investigates the possibility of situating productive uses on wasteland alongside and beneath the highway. Raised highways are often condemned as urban blights that lead to localized social and economic poverty. This project supposes that this need not be the case, and that the highway can be seen as a community asset by generating functional and symbolic relationships between it and the surrounding landscapes. The aim of this project is to knit social, economic and ecological processes together with essential urban infrastructure to design new ways of generating potential for wasted urban space. Ecological processes such as the flooding of the Don River at the east of the site, and seasonal solar and temperature variations are incorporated into the functionality of the greenhouses, building, and productive landscape.
PROJECT FEATURES
The project features greenhouse spaces below the raised section of the highway, utilizing the side facing south to capture sunlight and the heavyweight structure of the highway for thermal mass to regulate temperature inside the building. Other features of the project include the remediation and reuse of wasteland adjacent to the highway for additional 鈥渃ommunity-based鈥� productive land, and the integration of educational facilities and a commercial space that sells garden supplies in addition to food and plants produced in the large greenhouse. Adding to the sustainable agenda for this project, tiny turbines were conceived for the highway鈥檚 median strip to generate electrical energy for the building through the wind from cars passing along the expressway. The building was also conceived around reused components and recycled materials available from nearby wherever possible. This concept has the potential to be implemented below many raised highway structures with unused or underused land below.

L鈥檈mplacement de ce projet se situe sous une partie sur茅lev茅e de l鈥檃utoroute Gardiner 脿 l鈥檈mbouchure du fleuve Don 脿 Toronto. Con莽u dans le cadre d鈥檜ne th猫se en architecture 脿 l鈥橴niversit茅 de Ryerson, le projet explore les possibilit茅s de rendre productifs des terrains inoccup茅s le long de l鈥檃utoroute et en dessous. LES CARACTERISTIQUES DU PROJET
Le projet pr茅voit des espaces de serres de culture en-dessous de la partie sur茅lev茅e de l鈥檃utoroute, le c么t茅 expos茅 au sud servant 脿 capter la lumi猫re du soleil ; le poids de la structure autorouti猫re est utilis茅 comme masse thermique pour r茅guler la temp茅rature 脿 l鈥檌nt茅rieur du b芒timent. Il est 茅galement pr茅vu d鈥檃ssainir des terrains vacants adjacents 脿 l鈥檃utoroute et d鈥檡 cr茅er de nouveaux espaces de production communautaires ; le r茅am茅nagement de ces emplacements comprend des installations 茅ducatives et un espace commercial proposant du mat茅riel de jardinage ainsi que les l茅gumes et les plantes produits dans la grande serre. Venant compl茅ter le caract猫re durable du projet, de minuscules turbines con莽ues pour le terre-plein central de l鈥檃utoroute alimentent le b芒timent en l鈥櫭﹍ectricit茅 鈥� celle-ci 茅tant g茅n茅r茅e par l鈥檃ir que les voitures d茅placent sur l鈥檃utoroute. Le b芒timent a 茅galement 茅t茅 con莽u autant que possible avec des 茅l茅ments et mat茅riaux recycl茅s disponibles aux alentours. Ce concept est applicable 脿 de nombreuses structures autorouti猫res sur茅lev茅es d猫s lors que des terrains vacants sont disponibles en-dessous.
