Public Farm 1 (PF1) was an installation by WORK Architecture Company (WORKac) during the summer of 2008 at New York鈥檚 PS1 Contemporary Art Center, at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), as part of its Young Architects Program. PF1 exemplified an experimental, sculptural approach to urban food provision. PF1鈥檚 aim was to demonstrate a self-sustaining, self-regulating, and multi-dimensional productive urban garden that could be integrated into a local community. Although PF1 was temporary, it proposed a potential future for many wasted and underused spaces within cities.
WORKac were keen to use a structural material that would be recyclable and biodegradable. Cardboard tubes normally used for construction formwork were chosen as the primary building material. The tube segments were assembled in a honeycomb-like pattern, creating a field of forty 鈥渄aisies鈥� - groupings of seven tube segments organized into patterned units. Within the grid of daisies, some tubes extended to the ground as columns to support the structure.
Each cardboard column was programmed to create a different zone around it and generate a variety of experiences and interactions under the farm such as a solar-powered juicer for fresh vegetable cocktails, a dried herb column, a periscope that provided close-up views of the fields, and a water fountain. The 鈥淕rove鈥�, a gathering of columns, featured tubes for seating and growing herbs. The 鈥淔underneath鈥� was an experiential zone using video and sound to simulate the rural experience. The PS1 caf茅 was provided with fresh, organically grown and extremely local fruits and vegetables from the container gardens in the courtyard.
PF1 is one of a series of experiments by WORKac in what they see as 鈥渞urbanization鈥�: the creation of places where urban space is fused with rural characteristics and the features of small town life and cosmopolitanism can coexist. These projects explore how to integrate typical urban density with productive space, bringing together food production and consumption through the mixing and layering of uses in the city.

芦 Public Farm 1 禄 (PF1) 茅tait une installation de la soci茅t茅 d鈥檃rchitecture WORK Architecture Company (WORKac) 鈥� dans le cadre de son Programme pour les jeunes architectes (YAP) 鈥� que l鈥檕n pouvait visiter pendant l鈥櫭﹖茅 2008 au PS1 Contemporary Art Center (Centre d鈥檃rt contemporain PS1) de New York, affili茅 au Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). 脌 travers une approche exp茅rimentale et sculpturale, 芦 PF1 禄 montrait un jardin urbain productif 脿 la fois autonome, auto-r茅glement茅 et multidimensionnel qui pouvait 锚tre int茅gr茅 脿 une communaut茅 locale. Bien que l鈥檌nstallation ait 茅t茅 temporaire, elle proposait des possibilit茅s d鈥檃venir pour l鈥檈xploitation d鈥檈spaces urbains perdus ou sous-employ茅s.
Les concepteurs de WORKac voulaient employer un mat茅riau structural recyclable et biod茅gradable et avaient choisi comme mat茅riau de base des tubes de carton qui servent habituellement d鈥櫭﹍茅ments de construction pour le coffrage. Les segments de tube 茅taient assembl茅s suivant un sch茅ma en nid d鈥檃beille, cr茅ant ainsi un champ de quarante 芦 marguerites 禄 - des groupements de sept tubes organis茅s en unit茅s structur茅es. 脌 l鈥檌nt茅rieur de la grille de marguerites, certains tubes descendant jusqu鈥檃u sol comme des colonnes servaient 脿 soutenir la structure. Sous la ferme, diff茅rentes exp茅riences et interactions 茅taient pr茅vues autour de chaque colonne de carton,鈥� il y avait, par exemple, un pressoir 脿 茅nergie solaire pour faire des cocktails de l茅gumes frais, une colonne d鈥檋erbe s茅ch茅e, un p茅riscope qui offrait des gros plans sur les champs, et une fontaine 脿 eau. Le 芦 bosquet 禄, un groupe de colonnes, pr茅sentait des tubes pour s鈥檃sseoir et cultiver des herbes. 脌 travers l鈥檜tilisation de la vid茅o et du son, la zone du 芦 Funderneath 禄 simulait l鈥檈xp茅rience de la campagne. Quant au caf茅 du Centre d鈥檃rt PS1, il 茅tait fourni en fruits et l茅gumes frais, bio, et tout 脿 fait locaux puisque provenant des jardins en r茅cipients dans la cour.
芦 PF1 禄 est un des projets 茅labor茅s par WORKac dans le domaine de ce que ses concepteurs appellent la 芦 rurbanisation 禄 : la cr茅ation de lieux o霉 l鈥檈space urbain int猫gre des caract茅ristiques rurales et o霉 des aspects de la vie dans de petites villes peuvent cohabiter avec le cosmopolitisme. Ces projets explorent des mani猫res d鈥檌nt茅grer la densit茅 habituelle des zones urbaines 脿 l鈥檈space de production en r茅unissant la production alimentaire et la consommation 脿 travers le m茅lange et la superposition d鈥檜sages dans la ville.
