Project Description: (version fran莽aise ci-dessous)
Growing Home operates a transitional employment program in Chicago for those who face barriers to entering the work force. It runs three certified organic farms in the Chicago area. One of these sites, Wood Street Urban Farm, has been the subject of a multi-year collaboration between Growing Home and local architects, SHED Studio.
The farm is located in Englewood, a once flourishing Chicago neighbourhood, which has suffered from decades of neglect and criminal activity, resulting in extensive abandonment and wide expanses of vacant land. Most major food vendors have abandoned the area, resulting in a classic 鈥渇ood desert鈥. Growing Home partnered with several local entities that started work on fleshing out the vision of an urban agricultural district 鈥渢o provide business, job training and employment opportunities while improving the availability of fresh produce.鈥
In the summer of 2008 three hoop house greenhouses were built and used to grow crops year round. As the urban farm area expanded it could not really function optimally until it had additional facilities. Consequently, SHED Studio worked with the Growing Home staff to identify the detailed needs that had to be programmed in the new building at the site. Phase 2 involved the construction of a multi-purpose building that included a permanent attached greenhouse, processing and storage space, and rooms for offices and meetings. The incorporation of neighborhood-beautifying landscaping was important to make the site an amenity for the community. A living wall, flower boxes and an area for farm sales were thus included, as was an 鈥渆dible fence鈥 with fruit trees and bushes. The final phase of the project is intended to include green elements that will make the farm energy efficient. Solar panels and a 鈥減ower tower鈥 with photovoltaic panels or a wind turbine will provide energy for the site; and a green roof will insulate the space underneath. The Wood Street Urban Farm now produces over 4 500 kg of produce a year and aims to sell half of what is grown at the urban farm within the Englewood community.
