Curran House brings high-density affordable family housing to San Francisco鈥檚 rough-and-tumble Tenderloin District, and it is now home to more than 60 low-income families including 80 children.
An imaginative configuration on a challenging site, this project puzzles together a 67-unit complex where 38 apartments have two or three bedrooms. It rises from a lot that is long and relatively shallow, wedged between aged apartment buildings on three sides. The building, opened in 2005, has eliminated parking, instead maximizing the site for growing space, additional units, retail and common areas, supportive services, and the non-profit developer鈥檚 office. Residents enter through a 鈥渄ecompression鈥� garden that links to an award-winning landscaped courtyard at the rear.
The protected rooftop yard, ringed by citrus trees, features garden plots available for residents to get their hands dirty and grow their own food. Small individual container garden plots allow residents to cultivate their own crops, reducing food costs while at the same time fostering a community spirit, and reducing 鈥渇ood miles鈥� environmental impacts. Fidel Cazares, who lives in Curran House with his wife and four children, grows heritage beans in his plot. 鈥淚t is a small crop,鈥� he says, 鈥渂ut it helps me stay connected to my hometown in Mexico.鈥�

Situ茅e dans le quartier chaotique de Tenderloin 脿 San Francisco, la Curran House abrite un grand nombre de petits logements familiaux 脿 loyer modique. Actuellement, plus de 60 familles 脿 faible revenu, dont 80 enfants, y sont log茅es.
Une configuration cr茅ative sur un site posant maints d茅fis, ce projet comprend un complexe de 67 unit茅s o霉 38 appartements d茅tiennent deux ou trois chambres ferm茅es. Il est 茅rig茅 sur un lot long et relativement 茅troit, pris en 茅tau entre des blocs-appartements anciens sur trois c么t茅s. Le b芒timent, inaugur茅 en 2005, a sacrifi茅 tous les espaces de stationnement afin de maximiser l鈥檈space destin茅 脿 la culture potag猫re, aux unit茅s d鈥檋abitation, aux espaces commerciaux et de vie commune, aux services d鈥檃ppoint et au bureau de le soci茅t茅 de gestion 脿 but non lucratif. Avant d鈥檈ntrer dans le b芒timent, les r茅sidents parcourent le jardin de 芦 transition 禄 qui est reli茅 脿 une cour-arri猫re d茅tentrice de plusieurs prix d鈥檃m茅nagement.
Un jardin prot茅g茅 situ茅 sur le toit, entour茅 par des arbres d鈥檃grumes, propose des parcelles de jardin aux r茅sidents pour mettre les mains 脿 la terre et faire pousser leurs propres fruits et l茅gumes. Ils peuvent cultiver ce qu鈥檌ls souhaitent dans des petits bacs individuels, ce qui permet de r茅duire leur budget pour l鈥檃limentation et de favoriser un esprit collectif tout en r茅duisant les impacts environnementaux des 芦 kilom猫tres alimentaires 禄. Fidel Cazares, qui vit 脿 la Curran House avec sa femme et ses quatre enfants, cultive des f猫ves dans sa parcelle. 芦 C鈥檈st une petite r茅colte, 禄 dit-il, 芦 mais 莽a me permet de rester en lien avec ma ville natale au Mexique. 禄
