Carrot Common is a small urban complex of 17 retail and dining establishments, office space and meeting rooms in the heart of Toronto鈥檚 Greektown. With the Big Carrot Natural Food Market 鈥 a worker-owned co-operative grocery store 鈥 acting as anchor, CC is a two-storey building topped with a roof garden and urban agriculture space called the Carrot Green Roof. The CC rooftop served as a restaurant patio from 1989 to 1996. However, in 1996, a design charrette to create a roof garden resulted in the transformation of the roof into a green oasis, with deck areas and diverse plantings.
In 2008, major roof leaks occurred. This disaster provided opportunity. After two years of planning and fundraising and a second design charrette consulting with many stakeholders, the Carrot Green Roof garden project was completed. Its implementation was led by Carrot Cache, the Big Carrot鈥檚 non-profit arm, along with over 40 people who were actively involved in the design and construction.
Approximately 750 m2 of rooftop accommodates a variety of uses. Partly enclosed structures on the roof provide an educational center and community event venue that are adjacent to both an extensive green roof area planted with herbs and an intensive garden with vegetables that need deeper soil. The other green assets of this project include a rainwater harvesting system, a composting system tied to the Big Carrot food store below, solar collectors, and a variety of demonstration growing systems including small gardening strategies of various types from hanging to sub-irrigated containers, vertical growing systems and biodiversity enhancements, all on display for the community. The Carrot Green Roof is intended to serve as a Learning Hub 鈥 a center for sharing knowledge and experience on productive green roofs.

Carrot Common (CC) est un ensemble polyvalent situ茅 au c艙ur du Greektown 脿 Toronto qui abrite 17 茅tablissements commerciaux et gastronomiques, des bureaux et des salles de r茅union. Comprenant Big Carrot 鈥 un des plus grands magasins d鈥檃limentation 芦 alternative 禄 de Toronto, qui fonctionne en tant que coop茅rative solidaire appartenant 脿 ses employ茅s 鈥, CC est un b芒timent de deux 茅tages avec une cour arbor茅e. CC poss猫de un jardin sur le toit 芦 vivant 禄 et cr茅e un espace vou茅 脿 l鈥檃griculture urbaine appel茅 Carrot Green Roof. Le toit de CC a servi de terrasse de restaurant de 1989 脿 1996. En 1996, diff茅rentes sessions sur la conception d鈥檜n jardin en hauteur ont abouti 脿 la transformation du toit en un oasis de verdure, avec des terrasses et des plantations diverses. En 2008, le toit a souffert d鈥檌mportantes fuites.
Apr猫s deux ann茅es de planification, une nouvelle charette d鈥檃m茅nagement rassemblant de nombreux acteurs, une collecte de fonds et une conception d茅taill茅e, le projet 芦 Carrot Green Roof & Garden 禄 arrive 脿 terme, sous la direction de Carrot Cache, la branche non lucrative de Big Carrot, avec la participation d鈥檜n certain nombre de partenaires locaux.
Une surface d鈥檈nviron 750 m2 de toit sert 脿 diff茅rentes activit茅s. Des structures ferm茅es permettent d鈥檃ccueillir un centre d鈥檈nseignement et un lieu de rassemblement pour le quartier. Il y a un toit vert 芦 extensif 禄 et d鈥檃utres zones comprenant notamment une grande terrasse, avec des jardins intensifs, pour servir d鈥檈space vert aux habitants du quartier. Le projet comprend 茅galement d鈥檃utres 茅l茅ments 芦 verts 禄, tels qu鈥檜n syst猫me de collecte des eaux de pluie, un syst猫me de compostage en lien avec le magasin d鈥檃limentation Big Carrot situ茅 au-dessous, un syst猫me de production d鈥櫭﹏ergie thermosolaire, des bacs de jardinage ainsi que des jardins verticaux, et une promotion de la biodiversit茅. L鈥檕bjectif est de faire de Carrot Green Roof un centre d鈥檃pprentissage destin茅 脿 partager les connaissances et les exp茅riences sur les toits verts, particuli猫rement avec des petits groupes de quartier. Cette proposition vise 脿 offrir des programmes et des expositions d鈥櫭ヾucation environnementale 脿 un large public, pour parler notamment de la gestion des d茅chets, de la r茅cup茅ration de l鈥檈au de pluie, des essais sur les substrats de sol ou encore des m茅thodes pour cultiver les l茅gumes.
