Chicago is home to over 200 green roofs, covering 23 hectares. Now, thanks to the City of Chicago鈥檚 Green Roof Grant Program, productive green roofs are sprouting around the city, including small commercial projects such as True Nature Foods and Uncommon Ground, whose roofs supply vegetables and herbs to the commercial activity beneath. The Gary Comer Youth Center shows how public buildings have also adopted productive roofs.
GARY COMER YOUTH CENTER
Located on an infill site close to a railway and a main road, the Gary Comer Youth Center has transformed a disadvantaged neighbourhood into a safe haven for children and seniors to enjoy and learn about plants and food. The building supports a 760 m2 vegetable garden located on top of the gymnasium and caf茅. A series of long strips of plant beds, nearly 50 cm deep, serve to grow a variety of organic food crops. In one year, the garden has grown over 450 kg of food. Solar gain, heat loss from the gymnasium below, and the use of tent-like structures extends the growing season into winter. Each group of students gets a chance to learn about the whole seed-to-table cycle and enjoy the produce they have grown.
UNCOMMON GROUND RESTAURANT
For 17 years the Uncommon Ground restaurant in Chicago has upheld a local supplier approach, establishing relationships with farmers who follow sustainable and organic methods. In 2007, a productive green roof was constructed atop the 100-year old building. In 2008, this garden was designated the first certified organic farm in the United States on a rooftop. The roof garden required reinforcement of the existing building to support the steel beams required to support the soil. Sustainable materials were chosen, where possible, including recycled plastic and wood for the roof decking. The roof includes beehives and a large variety of herbs and flowers, in addition to vegetables. Planter boxes are connected to a programmed irrigation system to reduce the risk of excessive watering or drought.
TRUE NATURE FOODS鈥� ROOFTOP VICTORY GARDEN
True Nature Foods is an organic market cooperative located in a small commercial building which underwent a renovation in 2006, including the addition of a rooftop garden. Known as the 鈥淰ictory Garden鈥�, after the wartime domestic gardens that supplemented fresh food supplies, the garden provides fresh organic food to local people. The ex-automotive shop with un-insulated brick exterior was renovated on a limited budget. The rooftop garden is covered with raised planters in which a lightweight growing medium is used.

UNCOMMON GROUND : UN RESTAURANT 脌 CHICAGO
Le restaurant Uncommon Ground de Chicago s鈥檃pprovisionne depuis 17 ans chez des producteurs locaux qui pratiquent une agriculture durable et biologique. En 2007, un jardin a 茅t茅 am茅nag茅 sur le toit du b芒timent centenaire dans lequel le restaurant se trouve. En 2008, ce jardin est devenu la premi猫re ferme certifi茅e biologique construite sur un toit aux 脡tats-Unis. Il a fallu renforcer le b芒timent en lui ajoutant des poutres d鈥檃cier pour soutenir le poids de la terre. Dans la mesure du possible, des mat茅riaux durables ont 茅t茅 choisis, notamment du plastique recycl茅 et du bois pour le platelage du toit. Outre les l茅gumes et une grande vari茅t茅 d鈥檋erbes et de fleurs, le toit-jardin accueille des ruches. Les jardini猫res sont reli茅es 脿 un syst猫me d鈥檌rrigation programm茅 qui r茅duit le risque d鈥檜n arrosage excessif ou d鈥檃ss猫chement.

True Nature Foods est une coop茅rative de march茅s biologiques log茅e dans un petit b芒timent commercial qui, depuis sa r茅novation en 2006, comprend un toit vert. Appel茅 芦 Jardin de la victoire 禄 en r茅f茅rence aux jardins domestiques d鈥檃pr猫s-guerre qui compl茅taient l鈥檃pprovisionnement en produits frais, le jardin fournit des produits alimentaires biologiques aux habitants du quartier. L鈥檃ncien garage automobile avec une fa莽ade en briques non isol茅e a 茅t茅 r茅nov茅 脿 moindre frais. Les bacs sur茅lev茅s sur le toit-jardin contiennent un substrat l茅ger.
