Dr. Thierry Gervais
Dr. Thierry Gervais is Professor, Director of the Film and Photography Preservation and Collections Management MA program, and Head of Research of The Image Centre (IMC), 成人大片. He was the editor in chief of 脡tudes photographiques from 2007 to 2013 and is the author of numerous articles on photojournalism in peer-reviewed journals and scholarly publications. He was the curator of the exhibition Dispatch: War Photographs in Print, 1854鈥2008 (IMC, Fall 2014) and the co-curator of the exhibitions Views from Above (Centre Pompidou-Metz, Spring 2013), L茅on Gimpel (1873鈥1948), The Audacious Work of a Photographer (Mus茅e d鈥橭rsay, Paris, Spring 2008), and L鈥櫭﹙茅nement: Les images comme acteurs de l鈥檋istoire (Jeu de Paume, Paris, Winter 2007). At the IMC, he organized the symposia 鈥淭he 鈥楶ublic Life鈥 of Photographs鈥 (2013), 鈥淐ollecting and Curating Photographs: Between Private and Public Collections鈥 (2014), 鈥淧hotography Historians: A New Generation?鈥 (2015), 鈥淧hotography: the Black Box of History鈥 (2018). The latest he organized took place in the Spring 2025 at the IMC and was titled 鈥淓ncoding the Image: How does AI affect the Future of Photo History (IMC). He edited The 鈥淧ublic鈥 Life of Photographs (2016), the first volume of the academic 鈥淚MC Books鈥 series published in partnership with MIT Press. His book (with Ga毛lle Morel) The Making of Visual News. A History of Photography in the Press was released by Bloomsbury in October 2017. With Vincent Lavoie, he co-edited the last volume of IMC Books Facing Black Star (2023). His current research focuses on retouched press photographs and the use of AI in photo histories.
