Biography

Maya is a Toronto-based digital storyteller, content creator, and researcher, passionate about documenting the Caribbean experience in Canada. Born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago, she brings a culturally grounded perspective to her work, creating media and educational content that explores the Caribbean immigrant experience and broader Caribbean impact in Canada. She develops content that brings cultural events, stories, and Caribbean heritage to life. These include short digital series such as "Dis is Mas" on Trinidad and Tobago and Toronto Carnival, and "Diaspora Diaries," exploring generational experiences among the Caribbean Diaspora in Toronto. Maya has also collaborated with local cultural organizations and figures to amplify Caribbean culture. Her work blends research, community engagement, and creative media to educate, connect, and inspire audiences鈥攍ocally and beyond.

Why Digital Media?

I鈥檝e had a creative soul for as long as I can remember, always searching for ways to bring stories to life visually, even when words aren鈥檛 enough. Moving to Canada, I discovered the power of digital media to connect, educate, and celebrate culture. What began as my blog, 868 in the 416, documenting the newcomer experience, grew into creative projects exploring Caribbean identity, history, and community; turning passion into meaningful engagement.

All my creative work thus far has been self-taught, so I鈥檓 thrilled for the opportunity to pursue a master's degree in Digital Media and expand on my knowledge base and skill set. I鈥檓 especially excited to explore how AI can reimagine storytelling in cultural contexts鈥攂lending tradition, technology, and research to create experiences that inform, inspire, and connect audiences worldwide. Digital media for me is more than a tool; it鈥檚 a way to celebrate and preserve heritage, educate and amplify voices across borders. I feel right at home!
