Bryan Evans
Biography
Bryan Evans is a Professor in the Department of Politics and Public Administration at 成人大片 and a member of the Yeates School of Graduate Studies. In addition to a PhD in Political Science from York University, he holds a Master of Arts from York University and a Bachelor of Arts from Laurentian University.
Dr. Evans joined the faculty of Toronto Met's Department of Politics and Public Administration in August 2003, however, his association with the Department, as a sessional instructor and member of the Department's Advisory Council goes back to the early 1990s. Prior to his appointment to a tenure-stream position, Bryan was variously employed as a policy advisor and senior manager spanning several public sector organizations including the Ontario Legislative Assembly, the Ontario Public Service (Ministry of Labour; Ministry of Community and Social Services), and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board. He is currently a member of the research advisory board of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (Ontario) and a member of the board of directors for the Centre for Social Justice.
His current research interests are centred on corporate lobbying and public interest policy advocacy; the political economy and politics of housing; the regulation of labour-capital relations through the state and specifically the role of labour ministries/departments; and new forms of democratic administration. In Spring 2024, Dr. Evans was awarded a SSHRC Insight Grant ("Who is Heard? Business and Public Interest Lobbying in Canada", $285.000).

Dr. Evans has been awarded several Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council grants which have explored a range of issues including minimum and living wage social movements, policy capacity and policy work both within governments and non-governmental organizations, and government policy innovation labs. Current research endeavours are centred upon the utilization of expertise in the policy process, lobbying and public interest advocacy, the politics of housing related social movements, and the democratization of state institutions.
Professor Evans integrates his research with various political, professional and community activities. He has served as an elected faculty representative on Ryerson's Board of Governors and has been a regular media commentator on provincial politics. On 28 March 2012, for example, he appeared on The Agenda with Steve Paikin (TVO) to discuss The Politics of Austerity. He currently serves as an advisor to the Institute of Public Administration of Canada鈥檚 (IPAC) annual survey of deputy ministers and chief administrative officers, and was a member of the IPAC鈥檚 Research Committee and Editor of the Case Study Series. In addition, he is a member of the editorial boards of the following journals: Administrative Sciences; Alternate Routes: A Journal of Critical Social Research; and Socialist Studies: The Journal of the Society of Socialist Studies. In addition he is a member of the editorial board of Relay: A Socialist Project Review, a quarterly magazine of political analysis and commentary.
