Spotlight

Maria Jung

Maria Jung joined the Department of Criminology at 成人大片 in July 2016. She completed her B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in Criminology at the University of Toronto. Her SSHRC-supported doctoral dissertation research examined the relationship between changes in immigration and changes in crime rates over time in Canadian cities and provinces for the period, 1976-2011.

Her primary research interests focus on the relationship between immigration and crime, immigrant and racialized people鈥檚 perceptions of the police, and the overrepresentation of racialized people in the criminal legal system.

With Dr. Scot Wortley (University of Toronto), she has also co-authored a report for the Ontario Human Rights Commission documenting racial disparity in the arrest and charge data from the Toronto Police Service.

In collaboration with Dr. Natasha Madon (Griffith University) and Dr. Carolyn Greene (Wilfrid Laurier University), she is currently working on a SSHRC-supported project examining how immigrant-specific experiences (e.g., their experiences of crime, police, victimization in the country of origin, extent of democracy in the country of origin, migration experiences, experiences of discrimination and social exclusion, etc.) may shape how they expect to be treated by the police through the novel notion of anticipatory justice and how they evaluate the police in Canada in comparison with the police in their country of origin.

She is also a part of the editorial board for the publication , a free subscription journal providing an accessible look at the most policy-relevant and high-quality criminological research currently being published.
