Program information
The ³ÉÈË´óÆ¬ School of Medicine's General Surgery and Surgical Foundations Residency Programs received accreditation from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in October of 2024.
³ÉÈË´óƬ’s General Surgery Program will graduate competent, knowledgeable and technically adept surgical consultants prepared to serve in both community and academic centres. Residents will receive early and diverse exposure to all clinical areas of general surgery, from fundamentals and principles of surgery to advanced surgical practice and operative skills. The program will also equip residents with a solid foundation for continuing medical education for their entire surgical careers and for any desired subspecialty surgery training.

Foundational Curriculum
Our comprehensive, competency-based Foundational Curriculum covers diverse areas including equity, diversity and inclusion in medical care, research strategies, communication skills and patient safety. Our unique LEARN Time program also offers individualized time, space and resources for residents to focus on areas of specialized interest.
Candidates must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada and meet both the and the in order to apply to the General Surgery residency program. International medical graduates are eligible to apply provided they meet .
Residents who complete ³ÉÈË´óƬ’s Internal Medicine program will be eligible to complete the Royal College examination in General Surgery.
Residents will train at four sites with whom ³ÉÈË´óÆ¬ has clinical affiliations.

How to Apply
Applications to the General Surgery program are only accepted through. All applicants will be notified through CaRMS Online and ³ÉÈË´óÆ¬ will send email invitations directly to applicants selected for an interview.
Note that three reference letters are required with your application. Reference letters from one or more general surgeons are strongly recommended, but not mandatory. Referees should be clinical preceptors or faculty members who know you well enough to comment on your interest in a surgical career, medical knowledge, clinical skills, ability to collaborate and to communicate with others, and performance compared to your peers.
