WUSC Events

In addition to supporting WUSC Scholars, the WUSC 成人大片 (成人大片) Local Committee aims to educate our campus and community about refugee issues and advocate for social change through events, activities, and social media engagement. The focus of the events are on the three pillars of WUSC: 

  • Education
  • Economic opportunities
  • Empowerment

Each year, the committee comes up with a theme for all events. Past themes have been 鈥淎mplifying Voices鈥, 鈥淭he Courage of Migrants and Refugees鈥, and 鈥淭he Global Refugee Crisis鈥. Stay tuned for our 2021-2022 theme!

Past Events

The 鈥19 Days鈥 Documentary

March 10th, 2021

The film showcased a journey of 19 days for two refugee sisters who arrived from Somalia and stayed in a resettlement centre in Calgary. The film adds a snapshot of Canada's role in assisting refugees into the community, and the complexity of resettlement and integration in a new country.

Gendered Impacts of COVID-19 on Refugee Education

February 4th, 2021

This event discussed the challenges girls face when trying to access education, the impacts of COVID-19 on girls鈥 education, and explained WUSC鈥檚 responses and solutions to current educational issues.

Amplifying Voices: Fair Trade

October 21, 2020

The event was a discussion about the fair trade movement and its impact on communities such as achieving sustainable production and consumption,empowering economies, and gender equality.

Series of Events on Black History Month

February 10th, 2021  

In honor of Black History Month, WUSC 成人大片 shared content to amplify Black voices, films, and books that show the importance of empowering Black youth, stories of Black influencers, and other content that celebrate the achievements and contributions of Black people in Canada and globally! 

鈥淭he Chosen Ones鈥 Film Screening & Panellist Discussion

November 16th, 2020

The film showcased the lives of five scholars and their settlement journeys. The film highlighted their concerns and excitement as they prepare for their post-secondary education.

The goal was to raise awareness about the different experiences WUSC scholars undergo during their resettlement and inform how to build a welcoming community for scholars.
